Richard L. Kramer was founder and major owner of New Market Development Co. Ltd., an Atlanta-based retail development firm. For over a decade, New Market created centers tenanted by big-box retailers such as TJ Maxx, Home Depot, Marshalls and Stein Mart, pioneering the "power center" that defined the nation's retail landscape in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
New Market developed over 12 million square feet of power centers in 15 states. In late 1992, New Market merged into Cousins Properties, a $1.6 million real estate investment trust, creating Cousins MarketCenters.
